Coloradans finish 1-2-4, Korte shoots 62 to win Colorado Open qualifier

 

Highlands Ranch, CO: Two-time Colorado state amateur champion Chris Korte of nearby Littleton fired a blistering 9-under par 62 at University of Denver Golf Course to win medalist honors at qualifier #4 and advance to next week’s $250,000 championship at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver on July 23-26. Korte carded an astonishing two eagles and eight birdies, and if not for the three bogeys could have shot a magical and elusive 59.

In a 2-way tie for second just a stroke back at 8-under 63 were amateur Kyle Pearson of Highlands Ranch and Brian Carlson of Madison, CT. Pearson, a senior-to-be at Colorado Mesa University, was also a Colorado state junior amateur champion collecting Colorado match play honors in 2017.

Five players tied for fourth place at 5-under 66 including 2017 Colorado Open low amateur Jake Staiano of nearby Englewood. Another stroke back at 4-under in a tie for 9th were Peyton Shore of Saluda, SC and Bill Allcorn of Norman, OK.

An 8-for-2-&-2 playoff for the last two spots and both alternates was held for those finishing at 3-under 68. Amateur Jordan Brown, a member of Highlands Ranch GC, and Josh Hill of Superior, CO both birdied the first playoff hole to advance to next week’s championship. Brett Paquet of Mesa, AZ birdied the second to secure the first alternate spot and Corey Pereira of Cameron Park, CA birdied the next to lock down second alternate.

Today’s field was set at 84 players and 12 earned their place in the championship from eight different states, five from Colorado and three amateurs. Today’s competition was the fourth of five qualifying rounds for the 2020 CoBank Colorado Open to be held at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver, CO on July 23-26 where 156 players will vie for the $100,000 first place prize.  The remaining qualifying round is July 20 at Legacy Ridge GC in Westminster. A total of 57 players will advance to the championship from the five qualifying rounds with 12 determined today. Ten total players will be placed on the alternate list from the five qualifiers.
